Get to Know Brad Staplin

I hope my story will give you the courage to make changes in your business and personal life. Changes that put you, family, friends, and lifetime memories first.

2003

I began my career in 2003, and despite a few stumbles in the beginning, my business was successful fairly quickly. My clients were happy, and the referrals kept coming in.

In 2005 I saw the signs of a slowdown and began the process of pivoting to REOs. It wasn't fun, but I was surviving the downturn. Then the robo-signing scandal hit and I had $50k in escrows canceled in just one month! Time to pivot again! I started a side business selling outdoor equipment and continued to sell REOs and Short Sales as well.

In 2011 I opened my own boutique brokerage with just one other agent. A year later I expanded my service area to include a niche market in my favorite vacation spot. I was selling homes in Sacramento, two hours away on the coast, and also running the side business. Oh yeah, I was also the president of a non-profit youth sports program.

I worked 7 days a week for years, and in my mind that hard work justified my lack of time with my family, friends, and doing the things that I love.

2016

Then in 2016 one of my best friends was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. Tony was a vibrant, 49-year-old man with a great family, a thriving business, and now he was being told that he only has a few months to live.

Tony's diagnosis really shook me. How unfair life is. Why would this happen to such a good person, with a huge heart, willing to do anything for his family and friends? He often told me that he was glad this happened to him rather than anyone in his family, or my family. That's the type of person Tony was. It made me rethink my life and how short it can be. I began to evaluate how I was living.

It didn’t take long for me to gain clarity. I wasn’t living, I was constantly running, chasing more, more, more. I may have been successful in a business sense but not in any other aspect of life, it was time to change.

I set up my real estate business in a way that it ran more efficiently, set boundaries and expectations for my clients while still giving them the service they deserved.

I started saying “no” to toxic clients who wanted to work with me but didn’t respect the boundaries, my time, or my family time. I sold my side business, my wife retired to spend more time with her aging parents, I took my family on a real vacation, and I went fishing for the first time in years!

Talk about change!

What was amazing is that my business didn’t suffer, it actually grew!

My mind was clear and focused, I was able to accomplish more in less time. I was more present with my family, friends, and clients, which attracted more clients. Putting my personal life ahead of my business made my business more magnetic than ever!
